Hi,
if you are wanting to work out the percentage between 2 dogs its easy done.

1. Add the percentages of the dogs together.(Both Parents)
2. Then Divide that by 2.

eg;
1) 75 plus 87 =162
2) 162 divided by 2 = 81

Just a quick update on the pup that 5 week old pup that Paul use as an example Cox Gigga or Wilbur as we have named him he is now 10 months old, looks alot like Shrek who is his dad Gigga`s dad , he weighs in at about 31kgs and is still filling out.
Wilbur now lives in Invercargill N.Z, does anyone know of any other Aussie Bulldogs in N Z????

A percentage of 81.25% or between 5/8 and 7/8 british bulldog is used as a guide for the most consistent and best looking Aussie Bulldogs. However type, health ,personality and colour etc. must also be used to produce top quality Aussie Bulldogs. This is covered in the post "The most important thing".

It has been said on the forum that the Aussie Bulldog is "still under construction" and "our first objective is to get 1000s of dogs around 80% British blood, then we look at the size and appearance and make our selection". Until every dog meets the breed standard at a consistent level, and the number of breed dogs is reached; percentages will still be used, and british bulldogs will still be introduced to strengthen the Aussie Bulldog where needed.

It is important to understand that there is a reason why the UABA has taken this approach to breeding the Aussie Bulldog. The following information is not why the UABA is doing what it is doing but does highlite the errors that can occur and does highlite a successful way of breeding dogs.

The Victorian Bulldog is a bulldog breed created by Ken Mollet.

The body for registering the Victorian Bulldog is The Victorian Bulldog Foundation. They are a closed registry and breed only from the dogs that go back to the original lines that Ken Mollet started. Unfortunately they closed their breeding program too early with too few dogs to keep their program going. They have made the following statement; "working with a limited gene pool has become hard over the last few years and as we believe a lot of inbreeding would be detrimental to the lineage a little fresh blood will be selected when required."

To add to what Michelle said in regards to other "hybrid" dog breeders using percentage as a guide, David Leavitt who created the Olde English Bulldogge and then changed the name to the Leavitt Bulldog also used a percentage system in his foundation dogs; which can be found on the following sites;

David Leavitt used 3 seperate trios of line breeding to achieve his goal. These sites do indicate that after he obtained his goal percentage, type and temperament; he closed his breeding program, the entire time he has not introduced any other dogs outside the 3 trios he started with. This ensures that the percentage he achieved would not increse or decrease over the generations. All Leavitt Bulldogs and Olde English Bulldogge must go back to 1 of the original 3 lines.
David Leavitts breeding program is an example of closing a breeding program to outside dogs to ensure that the percentage achieved initially is not altered, and that the charecteristics of the dog stay the same.

If anyone has any questions or doubts in regards to the use of percentages or dogs used in selective cross breed dogs, I would like to say that there is no Handbook and there is no legislation on crossbreeding dogs and how it must be done.

But when it comes to Aussie Bulldogs using the percentage of Brittish Bulldog is agreed by both The UABA and The ABS as being a succesful way of producing quality Aussie Bulldogs.
