So I’m tyring to understand the % breeding system. So from what I’ve read the % is basically the amount of bb and you halve the % of each parent and add it together.

So for e.g male bb 100% X female ab 70% (other 30% bullmastiff) would make 85% pups.

Although genetic is variable and I wouldn’t imagine you could guarantee every pup would take exactly 50% of the females bb background.

I would think the outcomes could be very varied, for example is it not possible.
# For some pups to take the whole 30% of the bullmastiff genetics and only 20% of the bb, really only producing 70% pups
# some take  35%bb and 15% bullmastiff, which i think would be the desired goal
# some could even take 50% bb genetic only

So just wondering if I’m not understanding the whole concept correctly, whether or not there are other factors influencing the success of %.

Hi Kim,
You are spot on with all of your thoughts.
When talking about percentage in Aussie Bulldogs, we are talking about the percentage of British Bulldog. Which as you have said; can be worked out by adding together the parents percentage, and then halving it.

You need to remember that the calculated percentage of a dog does not change. regardless of what the dog looks like, how much of the dogs appearance carries in pups or how different it may be from its litter mates. The calculated percentage is worked out on how much british bulldog has gone into a dog, and does not always reflect how much british bulldog genetics are actually there. As you have said the genetics are always variable.

The percentage system is a guide. It is not to be used as an accurate measurement of British Bulldog in each Aussie. And it is not to be used as the sole indicator for breeding. As stated before, in some cases the appearance of an Aussie Bulldog is not matched or reflected by its percentage.

I assume that when you say the 'success of percentage' you mean how much a particular dog looks like a bulldog.

What influences the success of percentage is the genetic make up of a particular dog.
And there are a lot of things that may affect this. A few of them are;
Genetic strengths in individual dogs
Percentage of dog
Percentage of parents
Foundation breeds used in the pedigree
Type and Conformation of foundation breeds
Generations since foundation breeds
Compatibility of foundation breeds
Type and Conformation of other lines used in the pedigree
And line breeding

All of these factors need to be considered when pairing dogs.

You also need to keep in mind that when breeding dogs, pups can throw back several generations and look more like grand or great grand parents.

And as with all dog breeding you will encounter inconsistencies. It just so happens that two parent breeds of the Aussie Bulldog are considered the most inconsistent pure bred dogs, that being the British Bulldog and the Bullmastiff.

When a pairing is done properly; strictly from an appearance point of view. Taking into consideration each dogs pedigree, consistency, type, conformation and percentage. The appearance of the dog should be reflected in the percentage. If not in the first generation, it may be more consistent in the second generation.

In answer to your main question; Yes, an Aussie Bulldog may vary more or less in the amount of British Bulldog genetics that it inherits. However this does not change the calculated percentage of a dog.

Is this what you were asking about? Have I over complicated it? Is there anything that is unclear? or any questions that arise from what I have said?
